Lower Bound Restrictions on Intensities in Data Envelopment Analysis

چکیده
We propose an extension to the basic DEA models that guarantees that if an intensity is positive then it must be at least as large as a pre-defined lower bound. This requirement adds an integer programming constraint known within Operations Research as a Fixed-Charge (FC) type of constraint. Accordingly, we term the new model DEA FC. The proposed model lies between the DEA models that allow units to be scaled arbitrarily low, and the Free Disposal Hull model that allows no scaling. We analyze 18 datasets from the literature to demonstrate that sufficiently low intensities—those for which the scaled Decision-Making Unit (DMU) has inputs and outputs that lie below the minimum values observed—are pervasive, and that the new model ensures fairer comparisons without sacrificing the required discriminating power. We explain why the “low-intensity” phenomenon exists. In sharp contrast to standard DEA models we demonstrate via examples that an inefficient DMU may play a pivotal role in determining the technology. We also propose a goal programming model that determines how deviations from the lower bounds affect efficiency, which we term the trade-off between the deviation gap and the efficiency gap.

An improved approach for ranking the candidates in a voting system based on efficiency intervals
This paper proposes improvements and revisions to a recent approach in a voting system, and provides an effective approach with a stronger discriminate power. For this purpose, the advantage of a linear transformation is utilized to redene a previously used concept of virtual worst candidate, by incorporating the existing weight restrictions. Then, the best score of this virtual candidate is us...
متن کاملProposing a Robust Model of Interval Data Envelopment Analysis to Performance Measurement under Double Uncertainty Situations
It is very necessary to consider the uncertainty in the data and how to deal with it when performance measurement using data envelopment analysis. Because a little deviation in the data can lead to a significant change in the performance results. However, in the real world and in many cases, the data is uncertain. Interval data envelopment analysis is one of the most widely used approaches to d...
متن کاملDifferential Characteristics of Efficient Frontiers in DEA with Weight Restrictions
The non-differentiability and implicit definition of boundary of production possibility set (PPS) in data envelopment analysis (DEA) are two important difficulties for obtaining directional characteristics, including different elasticity measures and marginal rates of substitution. Also, imposing weight restrictions in DEA models have some shortcomings and misunderstandings. In this paper we ut...
متن کاملEfficiency distribution and expected efficiencies in DEA with imprecise data
Several methods have been proposed for ranking the decision-making units (DMUs) in data envelopment analysis (DEA) with imprecise data. Some methods have only used the upper bound efficiencies to rank DMUs. However, some other methods have considered both of the lower and upper bound efficiencies to rank DMUs. The current paper shows that these methods did not consider the DEA axioms and may be...

Unemployment is one of the most important economic problems in Iran, so that many of its managers plan to increase employment rates. Increasing the employment rate needs to increase economic productivity which DEA is one of the most appropriate evaluation methods for estimating the productivity of similar organizations. Employment in the amount of data input and output can be just interval. In ...
